Why Do All Front Loading Washers Smell Like Mold and Mildew?

All front loading washers and dryers, whether they are combination washer and dryer sets, stackable washer and dryer models, or stand-alone side-by-side appliances, eventually start to develop a mildew/mold smell. This is largely due to the fact that a small amount of water remains in the washer after the cycle is completed. There is no way to manually remove the excess water since it is not accessible. However, there are several things you can do to prevent this problem and keep your clothes smelling fresh and clean.

  1. Leave the door open after cycles. Leaving the door slightly open prevents humidity and water from being trapped inside the washer and makes it easier for the water to evaporate.
  2. Wipe down the drum and door seals after cycles. Use a dry cloth to remove any water and moisture from the door, drum, and door seals.
  3. Run the clean cycle at least once a month. Modern front loading washers have a clean cycle, or use the regular cycle on the cold setting. Use an appropriate product, or make your own cleaning solution with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda, poured directly into the drum.
  4. Do not leave clothes in the washer for an extended period of time. Wet clothes left overnight or longer in a front loading washer will smell and have to be rewashed. Even in combination washer and dryer models, you should not leave the dry clothes overnight.

How to Choose Laundry Detergents for a Washer and Dryer Combo
